Pick up almost anything off a store shelf and the packaging around it started as a single printed roll wider than a doorway. Somebody had to cut that roll down to the exact size the customer ordered, weigh it, wrap it, and get it out the door. As a Slitter Operator in Sparta, that somebody is you. The slitter is the machine that does the cutting, feeding wide rolls of printed material through a set of blades and winding them back up as narrower rolls. Your job is to set it up, run it, and make sure what comes off the end is right. The work is loud, physical, and measured in fractions of an inch. When it runs well, you know it, and so does everyone downstream.
The company is a packaging manufacturer in Sparta, Michigan, producing printed packaging materials for commercial customers. The operation runs a press department and a finishing department under one roof, with three full shifts keeping the line moving Monday through Friday. It is a production plant in the traditional sense: machines, skids, paperwork, and people who know how to keep all three in order.
Your shift starts at the slitter, reading the order specs and setting the machine to match, then running it as fast as quality allows and no faster. You watch the material feed through, check widths and print, and catch problems before they become scrap. When a run finishes, you pull finished rolls and shafts off the equipment, lifting up to 70 pounds three to five times an hour, weigh each roll, wrap it, and stack it on a skid. You do the same for finished product coming out of the press department. In between, you fill out production paperwork accurately, handle routine preventative maintenance on your machine, and do enough quick math on measurements, rates, and percentages that a calculator becomes a reflex. Good color vision matters here, because you are checking printed material all day.
