Bending sheet steel is an art, and a process. Somebody has to cut it, punch it, hoist it over their head, and lock it into a seam before a finished unit ever makes it to the end of the line. That somebody is an Assembly Associate at the manufacturing plant in Middleville. No sugarcoating here. The work is physical, it is repetitive, and it belongs to people who can keep a steady beat for a whole shift without letting the quality slide. Anybody who has put time in on a production floor knows what 50 pounds feels like in hour nine. That is the job, plain and simple.
Our client builds big residential and commercial appliances out of sheet steel, running high-volume assembly lines in Middleville, maybe 25 minutes southeast of Grand Rapids. Real manufacturing floor. Overhead conveyors, seaming and punching equipment, PPE rules at every station and everybody takes them seriously. Full-time work, overtime is part of the deal, and placement within sub-assembly depends on skill set and what production needs that week. Simple as that.
A shift starts with PPE on and work instructions in hand. Associates cut sheet steel to size, punch holes to spec, and feed sheets into a seaming lock machine with arms fully extended. Formed steel jackets, up to 50 pounds a pop, get lifted overhead and hung on the conveyors. Down the line it is drills, socket wrenches, hammers, and air tools, securing and joining and covering product, tilting it, turning it, keeping it moving. Eyes stay open the whole time for specs, fit, dings, anything that is gonna cause a problem downstream. Eight to twelve hours of bending, reaching, and lifting, with cross-training on other stations during the learning window. Once somebody knows a station cold, guess what? They are showing the next person how it is done.
