As a Shelter Staff member, you’ll be the steady, caring presence that keeps things safe and humane for people experiencing crisis. From checking in members for the night to easing tension before it sparks, your actions carry real weight. This isn’t glamorous work—but it’s meaningful, human, and vital. Think of it as being a partner to the most vulnerable in our community, one shift at a time.

We are a nonprofit daytime shelter and resource center in Kalamazoo, open 365 days a year to anyone in need. Our mission is to empower people to make positive life changes by offering dignity, hope, trust, and unconditional acceptance.

Each night, you’ll welcome guests, monitor entry and exits, and maintain a calm, respectful environment. You may be asked to guide members to showers, wash laundry, check lockers, and use radio communication for quick response. Expect to patrol indoor and outdoor areas, support volunteers and donors, and complete light cleaning like sweeping, mopping, and sanitizing. Above all, you’ll listen, de-escalate tense moments, and help people feel seen and safe.

What We Offer This Position

$17.50–$18.50 per hour
6:00 pm–6:30 am overnight shift
Alternating 3- and 4-day workweeks with the full 121-day schedule known in advance
Weekly pay

A $100 bonus for every friend you refer to us, plus an additional $25 bonus for your referral to WSI

Qualifications

At least 1 year of security experience
At least 1 year of direct customer service or hospitality experience
Must be able to speak, write, and read basic English
Strong communication, de-escalation, and problem-solving skills
Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 pounds
Comfort using email and electronic calendars
Compassion and patience when working with diverse populations
